Green Laning and the environment
Q. Are we killing the planet?
A. Well no, no more than anyone else.
I estimate I use a full tank of fuel a month on Green Laning. For my vehicle that’s 100 Kg of carbon emitted a month = 1.2T a year. So that’s me and my wife, 2 dogs, 12 weekends of green laning = 24 days of enjoyment.
OK, fine. I’ll give up green laning and instead I’ll go on a cruise instead. Big mistake! a cruise in the Med emits 3.6T of carbon. That’s 3 times what I emit for just 1 x 7 day holiday.
My point is that unless YOU emit zero carbon, then Carbon Neutrality starts at home. We all buy food and drink which has been imported from every corner of the planet. We all drive our cars when we could have walked/cycled and we all emit carbon whilst partaking in our hobbies. Green Laners are no different to everyone else who have hobbies.

What you can you do to offset your carbon emissions?
Personally, I plant trees, a fair number of them. We’ve already established that I emit 1,200 Kg of CO2 a year partaking in my hobby.
A matured tree will remove 10Kg of CO2 from the atmosphere each year. So what have I done? planted Planted 120 tress using a not-for-profit company called One Tree Planted. The idea is simple $1 = 1 Tree. So all it’s cost me is $120 and my conscience is clear.

Do Off-Road vehicles destroy lanes?
The lanes that we drive are a result of decades and hundreds of years (in some case) of traffic, whether that be foot, hoof or wheel. On top of that the force of mother nature shapes theses lanes every day. I have literally driven a lane 3 weeks apart, in between driving the lane a storm came though and changed the lane dramatrically, all down to the power of water.
To blame 4×4’s for the changing shape of the lane is a bit silly.
However, in the interests of balance, there are certain sitiuations where damage can be done to a lane if it were to be driven by a vehicle. This is where common-sense should prevail and the driver should assess the effect of him or her driving the lane. All responsible Green Laners will refrain from damaging the lane.
